Frequently asked questions

What is a console table?

A console table is normally a narrow table created to fit against a wall - often used in hallways, behind sofas or entryways. They are both for decoration and functionality and often hold keys, lamps, letter and décor such as pictures and plants. The name comes from the French word "Consolide" meaning strengthen and they originally only had 2 legs and bracket supports. Now, modern versions normally have 4 legs and include shelves for storage, with the most important feature being a slim profile.

Can you put a console table over a radiator?

Yes, in fact we specialise in creating console tables which are modified to be radiator tables. It is important to leave space for the heat to circulate and prevent damage to the walls and furniture, however this is why custom built pieces are ideal as we ensure all these specifications are met. Simply send your radiator size to us, and we will design, measure and make your radiator console table for you.

How to style a console table?

Styling a console table is easy when you know the tried and tested formula. For hallway table, the most common method is a mirror in the middle, with a large lamp on one side, and a vase with some books on the other. With the lamp, we recommend placing picture frames behind in a similar colour to the mirror frame, and then something small in front. On the vase side, try the books laying on both their side or have them standing vertically for more visual interest. Finally, consider a small tray to catch keys and other items.

Can a console table be used as a desk?

Yes, it is quite common for our console table to be used as a desk. We recommend fixing it to the wall for maximum stability and also ensuring the depth is correct for your use. We recommend this hall table here as a slim desk.

Can a console table hold a tv?

Absolutely, many people use their console table as a TV stand. We recommend that it be fastened to the wall for maximum stability. Ensure to measure your TV so that it will fit correctly, should you need any amendments to the measurements shown, just let us know and we can make it for you to the exact size you need.

What are Hall Tables made out of?

Most of the time console tables and hall tables are made from robust and durable materials, such as solid wood. Sometimes they are made from MDF or laminated chip board, which do not tend to be as durable as a solid wood piece, however they are lighter if weight is an issue.

Solid wood is the best option for console tables in the home, as not only does it bring character and warmth that cannot be replicated with cheaper materials, but it also provides stability and durability.

Our consoles are then finished with a coloured wax, which can be customised (take a look at our finishes here) to suit your home and style.
